5 things to do after installing Lubuntu 17.10

Lubuntu 17.10 is a great system, if you are doing fresh install, there are some stuff that you need to do, so that you can have a better experience using it. These are 5 things that you probably should do after installing lubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark.

5 things to do after installing Lubuntu 17.10

1. Run the update command

The first thing you want to do is run the update command, why this is important? because if you are not running this command, you may not get all software that are available on the repository of lubuntu/ubuntu.

Open command line/terminal on lubuntu, press CTRL + ALT + T and then run this command and make sure you have active internet connection:
sudo apt update
In addition you can also run upgrade command, which will install new software upgrades, so update command will update the repository list, while upgrade command will install any new software upgrades, you can combine them like this:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
Alternatively, you can also done this using software updater, if you prefer graphical interface. You can open software updater from lubuntu start menu > System Tools > Software Updater.

2. Enable canonical partner

Enabling canonical partner will gives you large collection of software packages that may not available on the standard installation. You can enable canonical partner using Software & Updates.

You can open Software & updates, from lubuntu start menu > Preferences > Software & Updates. And then go to 'Other Software' tab and make sure the 'Canonical Partners' is checked (the source code can be unchecked that's okay).

3. Install google chrome

Lubuntu 17.10 comes with mozilla firefox as default web browser, but if you prefer something else such as google chrome, then go get it. You can install google chrome by downloading the debian package (.deb) from chrome official website.

Alternatively, if you prefer the open source version of google chrome, you can install chromium browser, it's same as google chrome, except chromium is maintain by community of developer and open source, while chrome is proprietary.

4. Install multimedia codec

Next you need to install some multimedia codec, even if you don't use the computer for playback videos and music, at some point you are going to need it anyway.
sudo apt install lubuntu-restricted-extras

5. Install video and music player

Even though lubuntu 17.10 already comes with GNOME MPV as video player and audacious as music player, i think you better use something else, for video VLC is my first choice and for music clementine is the best in my opinion.
sudo apt install vlc
sudo apt install clementine
