Skype is one of the most popular chat and video call application on earth, skype is available for major operating system such as windows, mac and linux, even though the one on linux is still labeled as beta. In this short tutorial i'm going to show you how to install skype on lubuntu 16.04.
Last time i use skype for linux was version 4.3 which is very old and has a lot of bug, but at the time i wrote this article, the version has been up to version 5.5, i believe this one fixes some of the bug and has the same emoticon as the latest version of skype.
Step by step how to install Skype on Lubuntu 16.04
- go to skype for linux download page
- download the debian package (skypeforlinux-64.deb)
- open command line/terminal (press CTRL + ALT + T)
- go to ~/Downloads folder, assuming the skypeforlinux-64.deb is located there
cd ~/Downloads/
sudo dpkg -i skypeforlinux-64.deb
Once installed you can find skype from lubuntu start menu > Internet > Skype for Linux Beta.
They called it 'Skype for Linux Beta' for a reason, this program is not perfect, it still has a lot of bug, and microsoft is not going to release the stable version anytime soon. This is the best that we got, if you are not happy with this, i strongly suggest to try the web version of skype, with skype for web you only need web browser and internet connection.
