How to install multimedia codecs on Lubuntu

If you having difficulty or error when playback some video or audio on lubuntu, it's probably codec problem, you need to install the proper media codec to solve the issue, this article i will show you how to do it.

On ubuntu world there is a package called restricted-extras and lubuntu also has it's own restricted-extras package, so instead installing the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, use the proper lubuntu-restricted-extras instead.

Okay, to install the restricted-extras package you can do it from command line by running this command or if you prefer using graphical mode you can do it from synaptic package manager on lubuntu 16.04.

sudo apt-get install lubuntu-restricted-extras

So what exactly this restricted-extras package contains? on lubuntu 16.04 xenial xerus, the lubuntu-restricted-extras package consist of three packages; libavcodec-extra, ttf-mscorefonts-installer, and unrar.

Libavcodec-extra is the FFmpeg library video and audio codec package, this enables you to playback some restricted video and audio format.

The ttf-mscorefonts-installer is installer for microsoft fonts. And the unrar package, this package let you unzip/uncompress .rar archive format.

If that's wasn't enough for you, you can also install even more restricted audio and video codecs on lubuntu, you can install the gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly package.

sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly

Now you should have no problem playback any video and audio format on lubuntu.
