How to add weather widget on Lubuntu desktop

Wouldn't be nice if we have a weather forecast widget on our lubuntu desktop? in this article i will show you how to add a weather widget on lubuntu desktop.

To have a weather widget on lubuntu desktop, we need to install a program called gis-weather, unfortunately gis-weather is not available as part of lubuntu/ubuntu official repo, so we need to add a PPA repo for gis-weather.

Step by step how to install gis-weather on lubuntu
  • open command line (press CTRL + ALT + T)
  • add the PPA repo for gis-weather
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/apps
  • run update command
  • sudo apt-get update
  • install gis-weather
  • sudo apt-get install gis-weather

Once installed, you can find gis-weather under lubuntu start menu > Accessories > Gis Weather. You still need to configure the widget so that it can work properly, you need to choose the weather forecast service provider, such as gismeteo, accuweather, openweathermap, yr.

And then you can enter the city code, keep in mind that entering the city code is different for each weather service. I recommend using accuweather as the weather service.

How to get accuweather city code
First you need to go to accuweather website, and then search the city on accuweather website, take a look at the url, the city code is in the url.

For example new york city has url like this:
http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/new-york-ny/10007/weather-forecast/349727
The city code for new york would be:
us/new-york-ny/10017,349727

AccuWeather link may contains both different digits and same digits. If different digits you must enter two number separate ","
